The Gumnuts have learned lots throughout the month of October. We continued our colour project that was started in September as the Gumnuts continue to show great interest in identifying colours and seeing what happens when you mix two or more colours together. Miss Amelia created many different science experiments to explore colours. We also extended on the colour project through the Gumnuts love of painting and drawing.
During Multicultural week we celebrated many different cultures through craft, song and dance, dress ups and books. The Gumnuts created many different cultural crafts using their fine motor skills and their creativity. We displayed them in a project area in our room and used our globe and world map to discover where some of the Gumnuts families came from before they came to Australia. We sang a special Hello song each day that included ways to say hello in different languages At the end of Multicultural week we were lucky to have Miss Hana bring her cultural hijabs for the Gumnuts to try on as she talked to us about her culture.
During October Mr Steve and Mr Matt came and added some tyres to the Gumnuts’ yard to create a brand new obstacle course area. The Gumnuts were eager to try out all different ways of using their new addition to the yard. As the weather is getting warmer, the Gumnuts have also been very interested in engaging in water play outside; pouring, splashing, dripping and floating things in the water. In October we also celebrated Occupation Week as we discussed what the Gumnuts want to be when they get older as well as what their parents do for work. The Gumnuts engaged in craft, role play, games and other activities during this week to discover all about different careers. To finish October we are also going to have Halloween celebrations across Erina Kindergarten as well as a special visit from the Reptile Show. A month that has been jam packed with learning, fun and laughter!
The Gumnuts had a very busy and exciting September. We started to expand on the Gumnut’s understandings of the weather and the seasons in our spring project, bringing some weather identification and days of the week to our morning group. We welcomed Miss Amelia into our room for five weeks over the end of September as she taught in our room during her final internship. The Gumnuts showed interest in exploring colours. This led to many different colour experiments, craft activities and a colour display within the room to follow our colour project and extend on the Gumnuts knowledge in what happens when you mix different colours and their identification of colour. We also discussed the human body and what we need to do to keep our bodies healthy and strong! This led to a human body project where the gumnuts made skeletons and funny faces, exploring their identity.
During September we also had a HUGE range of events that the Gumnuts engaged in with enthusiasm. We did many activities for Teddy Bear’s Picnic week and loved having the Gumnut’s teddy bears visit. We celebrated Father’s Day and gave our fathers, grandfathers and uncles many thanks, presents and love. We celebrated our emergency services during emergency services week through discussion, dress ups, craft and the Gumnuts were even lucky enough to have a visit from the fire brigade who let the Gumnuts use their big fire hose. As well as all of these exciting weeks, we also had a face painting day to raise money for the farmers, we celebrated international talk like a pirate day and created scrumptious cupcakes to raise money for cupcakes for a cure. Thanks Gumnuts for an awesome September!
The Gumnuts are growing and learning more every day.
Over the last few weeks the Gumnuts have had the opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge through our extra curricular activities including music, Spanish, yoga and sports. This has allowed the Gumnuts to explore different avenues of learning as they gain confidence within themselves.
We had a fantastic time with dress ups for book week, thankyou for all the families who got involved. The Gumnuts used their imagination to take on different roles and characters, we extended on this in the room with our dramatic play area with a huge range of dress ups and character toys!

Lots of Love from Gumnuts room Educators
This month the Gumnut children have enjoyed a variety of activities leading up to Easter. We have had fun singing Easter songs such as ‘Little Peter rabbit’ and ‘Little bunny foo foo.’ At craft we have enjoyed decorating Easter eggs, creating hats for our parade, and baby Easter chick craft. The children loved watching our baby chick hatchlings. We learnt about the life cycle of a chicken and were especially careful while handling the baby chicks. Our Gumnut friends ventured to the nursing home to sing songs for the elderly residents there too! This was such a special occasion and was another great way that we are making links with our community.
Throughout the month we have also been interested in our community, we have enjoyed interacting in our new community play area, taking special interests in trains, recycling and garbage trucks.
We hope all of our Gumnut families enjoy a special Easter holiday together.
Love from Miss Jess, Miss Julie, Miss Vanessa, Miss Charlene, Miss Tiarn, and Miss Hana xoxo
January 22 – January 26, 2018
Our Gumnut friends enjoyed a week of fun while learning about our country Australia through a range of intentional teaching experiences. The children enjoyed creating hand paintings of both the Aboriginal and Australian flags. The children enjoyed the sensory experience of having their hands tickled. During these experiences the children examined photographs of the flags and used language to tell what the different colours and features of the flags represent.
Throughout the week we listened to a range of Aussie stories and had fun identifying Australian animals and using Australian slang such as ‘G’day’. We enjoyed learning Australian songs and chants such as ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! oi, oi!
We also discussed what we will do over the Australia Day break such as enjoy barbecues, go to the beach or see fireworks with our families.
We hope you all enjoy a lovely long weekend!
Lots of love from your Gumnut room staff xoxo

Welcome to the Gumnut room 2018! Throughout week one we enjoyed seeing our friends again, and meeting our new Gumnut friends and educators. The children explored the room and outdoor playground confidently, engaging in a range of interesting play activities and craft experiences. Our hair dressing play area, construction area, and kitchen play area was very popular with dramatic play with many friends and enjoying exploring the roles and identities of hair dressers, cooks and construction workers. We are excited to continue to get to know our little friends and to watch them grow, learn, explore and maintain friendships throughout the year. We are also looking to building strong relationships with our families and hearing lots of ideas and family input throughout the year.
